7 Best Ways to Avoid Rebound Relationships

in Relationship

If you handle them like you have some sense, rebound relationships aren't necessarily bad things; however, if you DON'T handle them correctly, they can be nightmares.

Chances are, you and your girlfriend have just broken up and you're keen to avoid anything that could lead you running into another relationship - especially a potentially disastrous relationship. So, it's only natural you want to learn how to avoid rebound relationships.

Figure Out EXACTLY What You're After

If you're not trying to swear off women altogether, figure out exactly what you want from the women in your life BEFORE they're actually in your life.

1. Be Upfront

Some women are down for one-night stands; others, not so much. You might think that by telling a woman you're just in it for one night is going to turn her off, and, it very well might; however, it's better to turn off the ones who are likely to get clinging and lure you into a rebound relationship than it is to lie about it and find yourself in that very situation.

2. Keep It Casual

If you get lucky and find yourself with a woman who's okay with one-night stands (or whatever other version of a no-strings-attached fling you're looking for), make sure to keep yourself in check. If you're truly trying to avoid a rebound relationship - or any relationship for that matter - recognize any signs that point toward the "fling" heading that way.

You give her your number and she calls you everyday, you find yourself constantly texting her while she's at work, you're calling her for things other than just meeting up - these are all signs you might need to pull in the reigns and reevaluate what you're doing with this woman. If it looks like you're headed toward a relationship, and you're okay with that, fine; however, if you're really trying to avoid a rebound relationship, it might be time to cut this one loose.

Good, healthy relationships allow you time to grow and mature as a person; ideally, the person you're with helps this happen. Yet, there's something to be said for working on yourself all by yourself, and in order to do this you generally need to avoid rebound relationships.

3. Find a Hobby

Might sound corny for such a manly man as yourself, but hobbies are great ways to not only keep your mind occupied but also work on yourself - figuring out your likes, dislikes, strengths, weaknesses - you get the idea. Plus, if your last relationship drained so much of your time that you never really got to do the things YOU liked, now's the perfect time to get started.

4. Climb the Corporate Ladder

Or, find yourself a new job. You might be perfectly happy where you are right now, but if you're not, with no girlfriend taking up so much of your time, now's the time to work on that promotion you've had your eye on or applying for a job you think would suit you better.

5. Head Back to School

If you haven't been to college, or never finished, or just want to get another degree, now's the time to head back to school.

6. Get Back in Shape

Okay, I'm not TRYING to insinuate that you're out of shape; if you are, you are, and if you're not, well, there's still always room for a little improvement. Getting in shape is not only good for your health, but it also affects your social influence as well as any potential REAL relationships you'll run into in the future!

Learn to Depend On Your Friends

Hey, you don't have to do it all by yourself. What good are friends if they aren't going to help you when you need them most?

7. Have a Guys Night Out

Whenever you feel the urge to call up a "sure thing" or, God forbid, your ex-girlfriend, call your buddies instead. Head out to your favorite bar, go shoot some hoops, or just hang out at one of your homes. Whatever it is, as long as it's filled with testosterone, it's sure to help you avoid a rebound relationship as well as any situation that might lead to one.
